need info about trolling for muskies

Recommended Posts

On Minnetonka any time of day although evening might be slightly better. Anywhere from 2mph to 5mph for speed depending on lure you are trolling. You can troll from 25ft behind the boat to 150ft back again depends on lure. Depth really isn't an issue. Muskies will chase the bait down if they want it. If you are trolling topwaters try about 50 to 100 ft back and troll as fast as you need to to get the action you want. Trolling spinnerbaits/bucktails I'm generally 100 ft back and moving anywhere from 3 to 5mph. Try to get the bait just above the weed tops. If you are working the weed edge let back a little more line say 150ft. Use willowblades going deep (less lift), big Colorados up high (more lift and whump). For cranks cast the bait off the side of your boat so you can see the action. Go as fast as you can without the crank blowing out. I try to troll cranks on the deep weed edge maybe 5ft from bottom but some days it needs to be banging bottom occasionally. Have to let the fish tell you what depth is needed. I usually do at least three passes at different depths on a trolling run trying to figure that out. Once you contact fish that depth should work until weather pattern changes. Helps to S-turn and pump lures to give a little stop and go action. Color is very lake dependent. Tonka leans towards black, orange and white for muskies. Gold blades and brown hair bucktails also produce.

There are really an infinite number of answers to the information that you're looking for. Narrow things down and ask more specific questions and you're likely to get more feedback. That being said, the first response had some good general feedback.

Alot of it depends on the lake type and forage base. On deep waters with a cisco forage base, don't be afraid to troll 10ft down in 70ft or however deep if you are marking bait fish.
