Best sealant to use on an Aluminum boat???

Hoffer

Question

Hi all, I apologize because I know this has been discussed before on this post. But I have a riveted alumimun boat that has a slow but steady leak. I cant get to the rivets because I just had the entire floor and interior totally rebuilt 2 years ago - so I dont want to take the floor off. The guy that did the work did an awesome job - but he was supposed to fix the leak as well. Well, the leak is still there and I have a nice auto bilge that works fine - but I would like to slow down or stop the leak if I can. I actually think the leak may be coming from the "runners" that are on the bottom of the boat. I have a lund rebel - and there is one middle runner and one runner on each side of this as well. I think the leak may be coming from the sides of these "runners". I would like to run a bead of some kind of product along these runners to see if that does the trick - but dont want to do all of that - if something is going to just come off in a few months. So, I am looking for whatever others have found best for this - name brands I guess if that is OK on the post - and even where I could find the stuff. Thanks in advance - I know you will help!

I am not an expert on this, but I think you won't find anything permanent than will seal the runners.

Hull itself is 1 piece, so it cannot leak unless has a crak, and the runners are riveted to it lenghtwise. You have loose rivets, if 1 or 2 are bad you can find a way to close them, but if many are loose, you will have to pull floor and work from inside using Rhino Liner or similar bed liner stuff. Sometime will work fine, sometimes will not, depends on preparation of surface and extent of damage.

If you want a good job that lasts pull floor up and have rivets re-set or replaced.

As I said I am not an expert on this, but I learned a little working on boats..... and I have an Alumacraft that has same problem as yours, pulled floor and fixed it in 1/2 day..
