Adjusting Linkage on 01' Johnson 150..

Deitz Dittrich

Question

I believe I have a linkage problem. The boat will go into reverse beautifully... Forwater it seems to have problems, somtime I can put the boat and gear and it will make a noise like it is trying to catch but wont. If I turn the eng off and re-start it then try and put it in gear it will... I have taken the eng cover off and looked to see what is moving when the boat goes into gear. I know there is a linkage nut somewhere in there, BUT I FOR THE LIFE OF ME CAN NOT FIND IT!!!! ~HELP~ crazy.gif

FYI, the eng also has a hot foot.. but I dont think that has anything to do with it.

Dietz, look inside cowl (hood) the cable has a round plastic wheel on a threaded brass housing. That's where cable runs through. You have to losen the clamp that holds it in position and you will be able to turn adjusting wheel.

Whatever you do don't let the gear grind like that, it's very bad for them.

Thank you sir... I saw the 2 round wheels but neither would turn... I had no idea there was a clamp... Ok.., if its having a hard time going into forward, is it the top round nob or the bottom I need to adjust?

Thanks again Valv You may have saved the rest of my haif from falling out.

I think top one is throttle, bottom is gear.

Since it's not shifting forward it should be shortened quite a bit (like 1/4" or 1/2" travel) it's a little time consiming finding right setting (undo clamp, adjust, redo clamp, test, do it all over, etc.) but you should be getting there soon.
