Fishing Opener Eve Crisis!!!!! Help!!!!!

I posted this in the equipment forum but I thought someone else might see it here as well...

I'm just throwing this out there if anyone has experienced similar problems and knows a potential solution. I have a 30 horse Yahama 2 stroke that is about 4 years old with a steering console (not a tiller.) I took it out Wednesday night and it was running fine. However when I was pulling back into the landing, I shifted the throttle back into neutral. The throttle physically moved into neutral but it stayed in gear. The only way I could stop my boat from crashing into the shore was to kill the engine. Then when I started back up, it would be running at a very high RPM...kinda like it was in gear, but the prop wasn't turning and I wasn't moving. Its seems to me that the throttle linkage is stuck. Maybe there's a cable thats not moving or something. Well I took it into a local dealer on Wednesday night. They just called me today and said their mechanic hasn't showed up for work and they probably won't be able to fix it for tomorrow. Now I am really screwed and pretty bummed out about not being able to fish. frown.gif Does anyone out there have experience with this type of problem or know a possible fix? I'll try anything at this point. Thanks for taking the time to read this

I had the exact same thing happen to a 40hp Merc a few years ago. Had the same set up as you. Turns out a piece of paper had lodged in the intake of the carb at the front of the motor holding it open. Took the piece of paper out and all was well. No idea how it got through the cover and found it's way in to the intake.....

Yeah, what esoxmn said. Mine comes out of the clips behind the plate on the inside of the boat every now and then. Just reach up behind the throttle stick and you should feel 2 cables. One is for the RPMs and the other is the shift cable. The front part of them should be up in little clips that hold the coating of the cable still while the inside moves. Probably just popped out of the clip. Push it back in where the groove is on the metal part of the cable and snap the lock part over it.

A technical solution I do not have. But last Memorial Day weekend, on Friday night, an inattentive driver rear ended my boat. Was a whole lot worse than yours as the boat went to boat heaven. I was relagated to fishing spots from shore, in places people didn't think of. I still caught fish. I got a bass with 8" of line between the lure. No way was it like the way I wanted it to be. But all is not lost, concentrate on shallow water walleyes, maybe put on a set of waders, check out rivers and places you never thought of, and it just might surprise you what you'll catch. Good luck, you can do it! laugh.gif

Hey Green and Gold:

I just saw that you are in Superior. The weather is going to be s*&%^), but if you'd like to go out on the river for a short trip sometime this weekend, send me an email at [email protected] and we'll see if we can't hook up. I know I won't be fishing all that much, there is just so much punishment I can take but I am going to brave a trip or two. I'll check email late tonight and call you tomorrow if that would work.

Hey guys thanks for all of the good info! I took the cover off of the motor and we immediately saw what was wrong...A cotter pin that held the cable in place to the motor had popped off. The cable was just hanging there loose. A new pin, a little grease, and its running like a champ. Guess I will be on the river after all this weekend! grin.gif That's whats so nice about this forum. Guys pitch in to help a fellow fisherman in desparation. Thanks again and good luck this weekend! JH

PS - Musky hunter: I'll shoot you an email anyway.
