walleye lake for opener

Recommended Posts

I havent really fished for walleyes much in the past but this year a few of us are going to make an outing for opener. Does anyone have any recommendations as to a good lake for walleyes within an hour of the metro area. Im not too concerned about size or slots but would just not like to get skunked on our first time out. Any help is appreciated.

The easiest place to catch walleyes early in the year is probably in the local rivers... Mississippi, Minnesota, or even the St Croix... one reason why is.. there already has been people fishing them and can give a very good general idea where to start to look for them, and another reason... there wont be 50,000 other anglers chasing them opening weekend.

Opening weekend can be tough for any angler..beginner, novice, or pro. It takes a little work to find the fish, and also to find what is going to be productive at what time. If you fish a lake, I would try to get some tips for that lake, and where/when has usually been productive in openers past.. If your not familliar with the lake you are fishing, you will need all the help you can get, and some inside reliable info can be priceless if your not familliar with the body of water.

It may not be a bad idea to call around the resorts at Millacs and see if you can get onto a launch for the day, or part of the day... they are pretty good about getting on the fish.

Good Luck, and have a great opener.
