40hp motors-what prop to use

MossBoss95

Question

I have a 95 merc 40hp on 17' Basstracker v and was wondering what prop type/pitch will give me the best performance. My boat cruises right around 28mph gps and would like to get a little more. I currently have the stock aluminum prop on.

Any input?

I agree with Val. I think you're about right with your boat/motor/prop. A step up in pitch may give you more top end, but hurt you in holeshot. Too much pitch and your 40 may not reach max RPM. The only thing I can think of, is to go to a cupped, stainless steel prop in the same pitch. However, the gains would be very small and would probably not offset the cost.
