01 merc 150 efi water discharge

My dad has this motor, an 01 150 Merc efi. He accidentally put the motor down in the mud the other day and now at low speeds the water doesn't come out of the discharge at low speeds. At higher speeds there seems to be some water movement. He noticed a small plug right beside the discharge and we are wondering if that is some kind of flush point. The intakes seem to be ok, but I just thought that I would find out if anyone knows about that plug. Thanks guys.

I have a '01 merc 125 and had a blocked check valve once a couple years back. I just exposed the discharge and back-flushed with water. No problems since. Your motor will still run fine with a block check valve, but I'ts nice to know your pump is working correctly.
