If the foam in your floor is dry and you have good drainage, it really isn't neccesary. Rotten wood comes from long-term exposure to moisture, i.e. standing water or wet foam in the floor. We have done it occasionally at the customer's request, but it's not standard procedure on most of our jobs, and we've never had any jobs come back. It sure doesn't hurt to take the extra measure of prevention, but if your dry underneath, then you should be good to go.

Steve- Talked to your dad on Friday! Thank you guys for the great information!

I'm wondering where I could buy storage compartment doors for my boat? I'm replacing some boards and the current compartment doors are made out of wood/carpeted.

Is there any way of getting around from doing it that way?

I'm going to be replacing next weekend and hoping I can locate something to replace the doors instead of using board/carpet.

If I have to resort to the board/carpet- it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Thanks!

If you're trying to match the existing holes, you're pretty much S.O.L. Each one is pretty much applicaton-specific. If your replacing the whole panel, though, there are some really nice plastic lid and base assemblies available. Several colors and sizes, and they have a rubber gasket to seal out any water. This may be the way to go.
