Turkey Blinds

Yukon Don

Recommended Posts

I've hunted turkeys for several years now and hunt from a ground blind. I've always tried to hide it the best I could. This weekend I was watching some turkey hunting shows and one in particular had them hunting from a commercial ground blind. The blind was out in the middle of a grass field with some decoys placed out in front of it. Do blinds scare turkey's? I always thought you needed to hide them even though they were camoed in some way? To my surprise they shot turkey's from this set-up. What has been your experience with blinds and spooking birds? Do you ever set-up in a grass field?

Thanks for your reply in advance, Yukon Don

I've hunted turkeys out of a DoubleBull blind for the last four years. I've been lucky enough to take 5 turkeys out of it in Iowa and Minnesota. I've never camo'ed it once. I just set it up along a fence row or tree line. The turkeys walk right to it like it isn't there. Have had deer, pheasants, squirrels and even bobcats walk right by too. Brushing it in might give a little added advantage, but I don't believe that it's necessary.

Yukon do it!

I have a D.Bull T-2 (teepee shaped) and set it up in the wide open field and had turkeys pretty much ignore the blind. You can get away with this with turkeys, deer is another story unless you can leave the blind up for a few days to get the deer used to it.

Thanks guys for the information. I've been going through a lot of trouble for nothing concerning turkey's. I didn't get drawn for this spring but maybe this fall I'll get a chance to try this "out in the open" blind method. Lots of times I would've liked to set-up in a different area but because of sparse coverage I didn't. This may present some new opportunities.

Thanks again, Yukon Don
