0 Kevin Turner
BLB, As voltage increases, amperage drops. IE: You will sustain 50lbs of thrust longer with a 24V trolling mtr using the same 2 batteries in series, vs a 12V trolling mtr using the same 2 batteries in parrallel. 0 Whoaru99
I think a 24-volt system probably will last a little longer than a comparable 12-volt system just because it's less prone to voltage drop (wasted power) and maybe slightly more efficient, but probably not too much different. Lets say that it takes 240 watts to produce 50 lbs of thrust. You can get 240 watts from a 24-volt system supplying 10 amps, or a 12 volt system supplying 20 amps. At the end of the day, at least on paper, it's a wash. 240 watts is 240 watts regardless if it's 24x10=240 or 12x20=240; 240 watts still has to come from the same two batteries either way you do it. All said though, it is preferrable IMO to use higher voltage whenever possible since you can use smaller gauge wire to carry the same amount of power, among other things. 0 Giant_Jackpot
BLB, 99 is correct, a watt is a watt is a watt. I guess you would have to look at the specs on a 12 volt trolling motor vs. a 24 volt to get the right comparison. What I am saying is, if you have to run you PD50 at the #6 setting to get the trolling speed you want, you can probably get the same speed at the # 3 or 4 setting on a 74 Maxxum (keep in mind these both have the maximizer feature). I don’t know for sure how many amps the 50 pulls at #6 vs. the 74 at #3 but for arguments sake, Whoareu99’s figures tell the story. Now to the bottom line: Get the bigger motor ya big dope! I know you are tired of losing to me in the electric motor races. Go with the new 80 Maxxum and be done with it!
0 Mark Christianson
Maxxum is on the way baby! I am gonna pimp out a 101lb motor. Bore it out, increase the stroke, put a turbo on it. I am just gonna sell the dam Honda on the back of the boat I think. Thanks guys. GJ and I had talked about this last year a little, and I just wanted to make sure there wasnt anything I was missing. 0 Kevin Turner
I've had this dicussion with my electrician buddy also. A watt is a watt is a watt. He keeps pounding that into my head. But, a 12 volt trolling mtr is very inefficient in both its thrust-per-volt output and in energy usage. Please don't take my post as arguementive.
