Begining trout fishing...

I am interested in some trout fishing.. just a few questions... where can a guy go on the north shore to fish off of the beach and catch some nice fish? What kind of tackle do you use? Rod? I ma new to that kind of fishing and kinda want ot try it.. but need help in getting started.. like spots... tackle..time of year.. things like that.. I live by sandstone and fish grindstone everyonce in a while with ok luck... but i want to try to catch some bigger fish.. from short of the great lake superior... any ideas??? please??
