I have a 2001 Durango R/T with the 5.9 liter engine.

The 318 and 5.9(360) are similar engines It was using a quart of oil every 1000 miles with 36,000 miles on the engine. In addition I was also using a lot of antifreeze. No leaks anywhere that I could see. The problem was a plenum gasket leak. The dealer said they saw some evidence of the coolant leak at a pump for the rear heater. My personal opinion is that the plenum gasket caused all the problems. Cost to fix, out of warranty of course, was $550 for the plenum gasket and approximately $200 for the water pump. It now uses approximately one quart of oil every 3000 miles. The plenum gasket appears to be trouble prone on these engines if you do an internet search. I hope this might give you some ideas.
