Abu's Eon Reel: Discontinued? If so why?

Hi Guys,

I was thinking about buying Abu Garcia's EON reel -- I think it was released a year ago, maybe two -- but I think ABu Garcia may have discontinued it.

The reel was hawked as having an unusual, in line design that made for extremeley long casting cabaility.

I see on Abu's home page that it was no longer listed, and I saw on HSOList that one of the sellor's called it discontinued.

The reel was ugly (by Abu's standards) but I am amazaed that they would dump it after only a year.

Anyone have any input? Anyone own an EON? Or does Shimano have everyone here as die-hard fans (I know the answer).

Just wondering

The following is the rumours that I heard ...

I heard that the gear system that they used had a lot of problems. I heard that they actually recalled some of the reels because they were having so many problems. After looking on some other boards, it sounded like many people who had them said they weren't very good quality. I picked up one & played with it. My thought is that for the price, I thought you could get a LOT better reel.

Just what I heard ...

I had a demo reel and the main problem was usually with the spool release. It had a really sloppy thumb bar and many times it would only enguage half way and kind of double catch when try to make a cast. I think the morums were good at the time of release but abu is getting outclassed at every price point. Even many of the hardcore musky anglers are using brands other than abu these days.

THe Eon's came out I would say at least 2-3 years ago, Again I heard that they had a lot of problems. I like the Abu's standard Ambassaduers roundreels but any of there newer stuff, low profile or even spinning reels I do not like. Like someone said before you can get much better reels for the price point with Shimano's or Daiwa's.
