Proposed Brook Trout Regulation Changes

Objective: To increase the average size of brook trout in the Brule River.

Reasons for the objective: To protect all brook trout to a size where they can spawn at least once.

To increase the quality of the Brule River fishery.

To afford protection to potential juvenile coaster brook trout.

Historical accounts of the brook trout fishery would indicate that the Brule River has potential for a larger average size brook trout (about 12 inches) with some fish reaching trophy proportions (17 inches).

Possible Regulations:

At this time, the proposed regulation changes will be limited to the area from Stone's Bridge to the County Highway B Bridge. We also feel there is no need for further bait restrictions beyond the existing artificials only regulation.

The current regulation would remain the same regarding Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Salmon. Changes would only affect Brook trout.

Other Options:

No kill on Brook Trout. This would afford Brook trout the most protection allowing the fishery to have the greatest chance of realizing its full potential.

15 inch Minimum size limit, 1 fish daily bag limit. This would have similar results as no kill while allowing for the harvest of a trophy fish.

13 inch Minimum size limit, 2 fish daily bag limit. This regulation would almost certainly allow every brook trout to spawn at least one time before harvest, which should lead to some improvement in the brook trout fishery.

We would like to get your feed back on this new proposal. Please respoond to P.O. Box 100 Brule, Wi. 54820, or e-mail to [email protected].
