Truck Toppers and Security

Muskieguy

Question

I am thinking about changing from a Tahoe to a full size pickup w/ topper, but am worried about topper breakin's. I love the fact I can keep gear and golf clubs inside my Tahoe and have it be safe.(locked with alarm). If I go to a pickup are there any toppers out there that provide the same amount of security??

Thanks,

Muskieguy.......

I dont know about toppers being wired for alarms most of the better toppers have locks on the handles so a person would have to go through a little trouble to get in. I dont know what kind of gear your hauling but I would get a extended cab pickup of some sort you can put alot of stuff in in the rear cab of these things, I myself would never go back to a regular cab. I haul my portable and auger around all winter in my topper, I just dont leave it sitting around to much where someone could break in. My theory is if someone wants to get inside and rip you off there proably going to. I had one suv about 3 yrs ago and went back to pickups, for me I dont miss my suv at all.

Hi Muskieguy...

Securitry was a big issue for me as well in topper selection. If you look at the major players in the topper industry, most, if not all, offer automotive styled locking devices. And if you have an alarm system on the truck, adding extra sensors or pin switches should not be a problem.

Do they offer "the same amount of security" as your Tahoe? IMHO... Yes. BUT they also offer more exposure to what's inside the topper you're trying to keep secure.

Even the best locks only keep the honest people honest. Either inside a locked and alarmed vehicle or inside a topper, it "they" want it, they're going to get it. The best you can hope for is to make it as difficult as possible causing the thief to think twice.

I my opinion some toppers are as secure than your tahoe. You can't just bust a window reach in and pop the lock to get the door open. Climbing into the back of a pickup is alot more work than getting in a vehicle door. My truck always has stuff in the back and I have never had a problem. I live and work in pretty decent areas though and rarely go to the cities. Not to mention I have insurance but I would hate to have to use it just because of the PIA it would be.
