outboard motor regulations?

beeflover

Question

At the boat show this weekend a dealer told me, this is the last year you can buy an outboard without the electronic fuel injection EFI which adds about $3-4K more to the cost of a large outboard motor.

Can anybody confirm this? If I can buy a new boat now for $3k less than next year, I could talk myself into making the plunge.

let me know, thanks

I think he's blowing smoke up your @$$ on that one. EFI doesn't add 3-4K to the price going 2 cycle to 4 cycle does.

I know the EPA would love to stop the sale of 2 cycle outboards because they can discharge as much as 30% unburned fuel into the lake. I could be wrong but I don't believe it is a law (yet).

New EPA emission standards go into effect in 2006. The EPA doesn't care how the manufacturers meet the standards, (4 stroke vs. 2 stroke, fuel injection vs. carb) just as long as they meet the emissions standards.

As of Jan 7,05, You can no longer order 175HP Carb & 240HP EFI V6s Sport Jets from Mercury. The 200 & 250 Opti Sport Jets meet '06 EPA standards and will continue to be available.

The 200 Opti Sport Jet will typically cost $3K-$4K above the 175 Carb Sport Jet.

I only keep up date on Sport Jets, and have little info on standard outboards. Kevin
