Tracker Tundra 21DC

warriorboats

Question

Ok, I am thinking about making the change from my Warrior 1891, up to the Tracker Tundra 21DC Fishing Team Edition. It is a great looking boat. I am definately in love with my Warrior, but am looking for something a little bigger and faster (Who Isn't?).

Any opinions on this boat compared to a Warrior?

I made the switch from my 18' Yar-craft to the tundra 21' DC team edtion last fall. The rough water ride is amazing i have friends with rangers 620 and 619 and there is no comparision in the ride in rough water. The room for storage is great and the room to move around. All gear below deck and water tight.

I think you would be very happy with that boat. Any other question just ask.

The reason that I am thinking about doing it is because of the hull design of the Tundra21DC. It is flared out similiar, if not more than the Warrior. Most Fiberglass boats out there don't have the strong flares that push the water out, instead of up. My preference would be Glass, but I don't like the layouts of some of the larger Warriors.

Have you ridden in the Tundra? I'm curious how this boat actually compares to a glass boat. I just don't see it, but I haven't ridden in one either. After owning several aluminum boats and now owning glass, I will never go back to aluminum.

I like Warriors, but they are just too plain. I don't feel the storage and interior layout is the best out there by far.

I have not ridden in one, but from everything that I hear, it is as close to glass as you can get without actually being glass. Supposedly with the gauge of alluminum that they use, and then this spray on foam that they apply directly to the hull, it deadens the sound which makes it even sound like glass.

I am nervous about it though, and that is why I have put this post out here, in order to get other people's opinions.

Everybody that has seen my boat can't believe it is aluminum. It is very quiet on the water.I was a little nervous about making the switch from glass to aluminum but after riding in it do not regret it at all.

Hiya,

I run a Tundra, and came from glass back to aluminum, so I guess I can sort of speak to some of the questions/concerns here...

ChuckN - I used to have the same exact attitude. Just couldn't see ever having an aluminum boat again. The Tundra changed my mind. I'm not giving up a thing going away from glass.

The reality is, my Tundra (I run an 18DC) rides far better than the glass boat I came from, and I'd put it up against any glass boat out there. The Tundra doesn't even sound like aluminum. The hull's foamed, so there's no wave slap at all. With the reverse chines on the bow, spray gets directed out and down, and the narrow bow cuts waves like you can't believe. The first time I had mine out in rough water, I was driving it harder than I normally would, just to see what it'd do, and I *really* hopped a wave and got a LOT of air under me. I braced myself for the impact, but the boat just sort of went "woosh" when it hit the water. It blew me away. The re-entry is amazingly soft.

The Tundras are also very quick to get on plane, which is a big deal in rough water. They do plane out different out of the hole - they don't nose up like some boats do, then flop down. They just sort of lift up onto the pad. The bow stays down more than other boats I've owned, and I sort of fought that for a while - I kept trying to get the nose up like I was used to doing. Finally talked to some other Tundra owners and realized that's just how they run. It took some getting used to. With the sharp nose, they don't pound at all though. They also stay on plane at very low speeds, which is nice when running in big waves. Mine stays on plane at about 20 mph, and it's on plane and under control, not just wallowing along. Even compared to the glass boat I came from, I can fish more comfortably and more effectively in rougher conditions in my Tundra than I could before. For me, fishing muskies on big water a lot, that's a big deal.

As you can tell, I'm 100% sold on my Tundra. I get a chance to fish out of a lot of different boats, and in terms of fishability, ride quality and performance, the Tundra's as good as I've ever been in. Nothing with an aluminum hull can touch it, and you get the durability/ease of maintenance of aluminum, with performance that's on par or above the best glass ride out there. What's not to like...

Cheers,

RK

Great post, it is getting easier to make my decision. I have heard that the Tundra has had a couple of cracked hull issues, I would assume at weld points. Supposedly this is fixed in the 2005 model, but I am looking at buying a 2004, or maybe even a 2003. This problem that I heard was at least for the Tundra 21DC, but may be for other ones as well. Anyone have any experience with this?

Hiya,

I do know of a couple issues with a support member coming loose in one particular spot on some 21s, and Tracker did do some reinforcing to address the problem after some of their fishing team guys pointed it out. I'll see if I can find some specific info on the problem and get back with some answers.

Warriorboats - drop me an email at rkimm at esoxangler dot com. I may be able to help you find a pretty good deal on an 04 Fishing Team edition Tundra. They Fishing Team edition was new last year, so no '03s, but there are of course regular Tundra 21s in 2003 models out there somewhere.

Cheers,

RK

That's why I will never go back to aluminum.

RK, if your in my neck of the woods I'd like to see your rig. I did see a Tundra on W. Battle last summer, maybe it was you chasing ski's?? I thought you roam this area a bit.

I too, was looking at buying a Tundra 21', it came down to that or a 20' Triton. In the end I picked the Triton, I won't be able to run it till spring, but I will tell you that Tracker have had some hull issues in 2004 in the 21'. I know of one hull that "caved in" when they were running in big waves, and a friend of mine said they had problems with boat control during a muskie tourney with a friend of his new tundra. He said they had a definite "sail" issue with the higher bow catching a lot of wind.

In the end, I haven't totally ruled out a Tundra purchase in the next couple years... I just want some more positive feedback and to know that any and all hull issues have been resolved. I really like the idea of owning aluminum over glass for up keep, and I relly like their layout, but I just need to get a little more confidence in them. I would love to spend some time on the water in one to see it being put through the paces. If anyone is ever on Cass with theirs let me know! I have a place up there and we can get together and do a little fishing.

Good Luck!

Ken

Chuck - Might have been me... I was on W Battle a couple times this past season. I grew up in Pelican Rapids and still have a cabin up there, so I'm stomping around that neck of the woods quite a bit. Will have to arrange a spin in the Tundra for you this coming summer...

Cheers,

RK

Does anyone know what the lateral stability is like in the 21 foot Tundra?

I saw a couple of guys muskie fishing out the 18 foot tundra, they were both standing on one side of the boat and it was listing quite a bit, more than I expected.
