Humminbird Smartcast locators

slick814

Question

OK... here's the dilema. I've got a very limited budget, and do a lot of shore fishing in the summer. I also do a lot of ice fishing in the winter. I was wondering if anyone knows whther or not the Smartcast can be used in the cold weather & water?

I was thinking that the RF 15 (newest model) would be just about perfect ofr my needs in both situations. No bulky wrist watch thing, a decent sized screen with depth, water temp, and fish location in the column.

I realise that it's not as accurate as a flasher, but for now, if they work on the ice, it'll free up enough $$ for a power auger in addition to the fish locator.

Anyone know if they'll work in the winter?

i had a smart cast watch type last year, when the water started geting cold in late fall my sender quit working (2 months old) It was the batteries inside the sending part (non-replaceable battery) getting too cold and loosing volts needed to work. I got a new sender and it didntlast 5 hours , I melted the sender apart with an old sodering iron to look inside, I wanted to relocate the battery outside of the sender (hard wire it)so i could ice fish inside my shack and keep the batery warm and out of the water.I never finished it because after changing the battery in the watch piece it wouldnt turn on again. I bought another cheap piece of dump; a hawkeye handheld fishinder, it did however shoot through the ice and through the hull of a boat, the transducer cord broke due to the cold and having 30' of cord and it wasnt detachable ,their redesigned this year and detach.

Anyway my smart cast watch model realy sucked even when new It only worked if casted less than 25' it gave screwy readings (underwater caves when water was less than 6' deep. there wasnt a lighted display for fishing in dark or at dusk and the "Smart" watch didnt tell the time. for nearky $100 is should have told the time...
