What is the best lighting system to use in a portable. I bought the new lighting system string lights which i don't really like, not very bright and you have fool with the battery, charging, etc. What seems to work the best?

I think a Coleman dual fuel lanturn is your best bet, there is only one problem. The mantels like to break, but there is two things that you can do to stop that from happening. 1. build your self a lanturn box out of 5/8th or 3/4 plywood. box should be just big enough for the lanturn to fit. You want a door on top with a coulple hinges and some type of latch. put a heavy spring in the middle of the door. so when you close the door the sping compresses in between the top of the lanturn and the top of the door. this will keep the lanturn nice and tight in the box. 2. only use tie on mantels the clip on mantels are junk and you'll be replacing them all the time. I have try all the other types of lights and found that this is by far the best source of light no questions asked.

I also have the new rope light. it isn't as bright as some things out there, but should be plenty of light to fish with. I also have a headlamp to use if I need more light for tying jigs, etc. If you want more light, and still stay in the elect. category, go to an auto parts store and get yourself a 12-volt trouble light. I also have one of these and it will light a portable up like daylight and last longer than I've ever needed to fish on a deep cycle battery.

Do a search on this forum or it might have been the equipment fourm and you will find a post where this person used a LED system that looked pretty cool! I cant remember the screen name off hand but I copied down his directions and I was going to add his system to my portable this summer. I know it was LED lights that were attached to the portable pole frame..wires were ran through the poles and were attached to a Vex like battery..with a couple of different switches for the different sections of lights. He also had a set of LED near the battery area for zapping his glow lures....pretty cool system. smile.gifsmile.gif
