Question

My father is thinking of building a permenant fish house and we are thinking of trying the steel studs instead of wood. Does anyone know if they are lighter or are we just wasting our money. any other ideas for making a fish house much lighter

Considering the application, a 2x2 will outlast a steel stud. Your shack will be flexing down the road and while being loaded on and off. You'll use screws as fasteners. If you could look inside the wall cavity, that screw will have frost on it. In time from the flexing and rust that screw will fail. Also the steel stud wont have the holding power for bunks, hooks and shelves. You'll loose 3' on length and width of your inside dimensions with a steel stud too.

If you did go with steel studs you would still need 2x4s for the corners, door and window frames and reinforcement in key areas like bunks and shelves. I don't see how you could be reducing weight when a 2x2 framed perm wouldn't need the added beefing up.
