Red hooks...

Seems like the newest rage going around is these red hooks, or "bleeding bait" hooks. Well, I saw a show advertising that Cajun red fishing line. One of the reps said that the color red is the first color bass filter out, I guess meaning its invisible to them. Wouldnt these red hooks be invisible to bass as well? Whats the use of blood or "bleeding hooks" if they cant see it? Im confused about these new hooks because from what Ive heard, its a huge thing. People are convinced that they do really make a difference. Ive used some on occasion, and havent been able to tell the difference. Its not like I get more strikes on red hooks than on plain hooks. If red is the first color bass filter out, making it invisible, then why the need for red anything? Effective marketing? Anybody have theories on this new rage of red? Interesting.

Becuase of its wave length, red is the first color to turn to grey underwater, I would not call it INVISABLE... The shorter wavelenght colors last underwater much longer, blues and purples... IF a hook became harder to see because it was red, maybe that would increase bites more. For me, anything that gives me confidence is important. So far for me, the only time I have found that red hooks have helped me out is on Topwater lures...

IF red does appear invisible to them, I could understand the concept of red hooks. But lets take for example some Strike King crankbaits. I saw some with red "bleeding" dots on the bodies itself. Arent they useless if bass cant see them? I dont know, maybe its just me then. Ive had the same success regardless of what color the hook is.

Blood is red when it reaches oxygen. Regardless of what color we see the hook at, the fish will see it differently.

We see blood as the red we all know, however, colorblind people see it as a different shade, likewise, the fish will recognize blood by a different shade.

If the fish is used to seeing a bleeding bait fish bleeding a "gray" color, then they will see that same "gray" color on these hooks and on the bait, therefore, triggering a strike.

i think the question is, if one manufaturer wants you to think the fish sees the red hook because it attracts them why does another manufacturer want you to think that the fish won't see their red line because it is invisible in the water.

exactly!! just like in lures like crankbaits. most fish come up from below the lure to hit it, so the colors on the bottom of a crank are actually more important than the fancy painting on the top or sides. the lures are painted real pretty to "hook" us, the fishermen, when we buy them.
