Suzuki 4-Stroke

AJ

Question

I am wondering what people's experiences have been with Suzuki outboards, specifically 4-strokes. If nobody has direct experience, what is the "word on the street"? Any opinions on these vs Yamaha or Honda? How do they generally compare cost wise? Thanks in advance for your help. I am trying to make a used boat decision.

.....I owned about an 1989 55hp Suzucki
that was purchased with a used boat.....the
motor was nothing but trouble and there are
very few 'reputable' Suzucki service outlets.
I wouldn't own a Suzucki.

I've had a 50-hp 4-stroke for two seasons now, 2000 model, bought it new. Not a problem yet, quiet, great on gas, good low end, great top end, similar in price to comparable 4-strokes.

I also have a brother that owned a early 90's 150 2 stroke Suzuki and traded for a 115 4 stroke Suzuki this spring. The 150 was the worst gas hog I've known - probably 2 mpg on a quiet day at 2/3 max. rpm. It didn't give him a lot of trouble other than trying to keep up with the fuel bill. He loves the 115 - it is the quietest outboard over 35 hp I know of, it's quite efficient, and he hasn't had any problems with it. He does have a good service guy too. I love Hondas, but might have to give Suzuki a look if I were in the market.

I have heard nothing but good things about the 4-strokes. I believe they were rated very high, maybe the best on consumer reports or something like that. I don't have any facts to back that up. The way I look at it, 4-strokes will practically last forever if maintained well.

Dont know much about suzukis but i worked at a boat dealership that only put Mercury's on the boats. I worked right with the Mechanic and he had said that the four strokes were trouble. Especialy around the 90HP.
