FL-18 Vexilar

I just purchased a fl-18, never used a flasher before so today was my first time on the ice with this unit. My hook showed up as green, yellowish and flashing red the odd time. When i jigged my hook it turned green. I had my gain set at 0. Is this normal for my hook or should it be green all the time. I purchased the unit brand new without a battery i bought a 12v 7.2 amp battery should i get a 9.0 amp will this make a differce. Caught two nice walleye today that i would have never caught without my vex. brought them up 3 feet off the bottom. My brother-in law had his new lx-3 out and got skunked. Thanx to thorne brothers for the great service. The zoom feature is awesome.
