PLfisherman
got back from ortonville yesterday and did pretty well. friday didn't see a lot and managed five. 3 mallards 2 gadwalls. saturday the wind changed to the NW and there was ducks everywhere three of us ended up with 15 with a little bit of everything. because most of the corn is still standing the ducks sometimes move 10-20 miles or so a day depending on the wind. the wind changed to the south on sundday and didn't see as many ducks but a lot more geese. we managed four and a goose but hade to leave early. the best time to shoot mallards out there is between 9-12 because all of the ducks are coming back from feeding at this time. we hardly shoot any mallards out there before 9 unless it is a singe the big flocks don't come back until later. there was a group of gus in a flooded corn field by us and they shot there limit for 4 guys and on sunday didn't hear hardly any shooting. can't wait to go back in 2 weeks after Iowa pheasant opener this coming weekend
Duck-o-holic
Thanks for the report PLF. I liked your insight into how the birds work your area. So, do you think that NW wind pushed more birds into the area? I have strayed up to that neck of the woods when Marsh slows down, but haven't been there in a while. Didn't manage to make it out hunting this weekend due to work. Should be mallards all over the state by the time you get back from Iowa!
