Glider
Hi:I am looking for some advice on rigging a snowmobile hitch to pull a fish house using a 2" ball. I have a 2001 Panther that has a standard hitch with a small hole in it. Is there something out there to replace this or do I have to modify the existing hitch? Any advice would be appreciated.Thanks.
Gess
How about just making so you use a hitch pin instead. if u have a small hole that should be more then enought to use it. I pull grain gravity boxs all the time and 75' conveyors with hitch pins. Just have to goto Fleet farm or a farm supply to get a heavy duty hitch pin.. Or get a flat piec of steel to extend the hitch on the panther to get a bigger hole for a ball.
minneman
I have an 02 panther, I added a pc of flat steel with a larger hole attached w/bolt and nylon lock nut. the first time out though it seemed I couldnt get it tight enough, the flat pc would turn to one side or the other when breaking, so to correct that problem I used 2 smaller bolts drilled threw the flat extention so that the heads would touch each side of the sleds hitch (where it tapers to a point). I didnt want to drill another hole in the sleds hitch, which would probably do the same, but may weaken it.
Animal
If you are going to be pulling a portable you want to use a hinged pin hitch. The tow bar needs to move up and down and also flex. You can get a hitch at most snowmobile dealerships or online at Kirks. Make sure you have the right tow bar.
Northlander
I had good luck with a long shank padlock with rubber coated keyhole guard. Just dont lose the key.
Glider
Thanks for all of the advice. I think I will extend the existing hitch with a piece of metal to make room for the 2" ball.
Aqua Eye
I know you guys are thinking of pulling portables with your snowmobiles but here's a story about someone I know who uses his snowmobile to pull out his large, heavy permanent fish house. He built a square box that has a ski mounted on the bottom and a 2" ball mounted on top. He hooks the house to the box which supports the tongue weight and hooks a chain or strap somehow to the box and snowmobile and tows them out on the lake! I guess stopping isn't an exact science but if it works?! Ever hear about something like that before? I haven't witnessed this but I know their not making it up.
