lumpy
Heading up for my first ever fall trip up to Crow Lake and LOW - area. Looking for tips on best presentations for these species. I have experience wire line trolling lakers and some jigging for lakers and have primarily jigged for walleyes. Hope to catch some crappies also and maybe make this an annual event if I have success.[This message has been edited by lumpy (edited 09-17-2004).]
Eastwind
If you stay at Muskie Bay resort they should have an access to Steven's Bay on LOTW. For Crappies a good fall spot is on the south side of Hay Island in the 50'+ hole. It should be no more than a 7 or 8 mile ride by boat. Good luck and have fun. lumpy
Thank you for the info. I'm staying at Allens which I think shares the same access to Steven's bay as Muskie Resort. Haven't been up since Memorial Day when we were fishing for lakers with cisoes. How deep will they be next week? How deep and whereabouts should I look for walleyes? Will they be mixed in with the crappies?
Eastwind
We normally go in early October so I can only speak to where we catch walleyes then. You will get some mixed in with the crappies at Hay Island. When we look for a walleye spot we focus on natrrows with moving water ( even slight movement) and points off of islands or shore with sharp dropoffs in to 20+ feet of water. rangerguy
I just got back from a muskie trip on Crow a week ago. You should contact Paul Trinkner who owns muskie bay resort on crow. He was catching plenty of lake trout in 70-120 feet of water very close to his resort. The HSOforum for his resort is www.muskiebayresort.com. You could really shorten the learning curve for lake trout fishing by hiring him or someone that he recommends.
rangerguy
One more thing I forgot to add. They were biting on sonars and buzz bombs.
lumpy
Report from last weekend!Drove up from the cities in a drenching rain on Thursday. Did not have any success on Crow Lake on Friday despite moving around quite a bit. Have not fished that lake in the fall so may not have really found the correct spots or presentation (we were jigging). Could have been the front that clammed the trout up. Caught one 3 pounder on Sunday morning before we scooted out. Any help for fall trout on Crow for next year would be appreciated. Email me at [email protected].Saturday on Stephens Bay started out slow fishing by the boat launch near the rock wall and then moving over to the narrows about two miles from the launch. Lots of perch and small walleyes there. The hot jig color seemed to be chartreuse/orange with chartreuse/green and firetiger doing ok. Moved on over and fished some spots over towards Hay Island and found a channel by an island with 25 - 30 feet of water that had keeper walleyes (depth was not marked on the map). That seemed to be the depths of the walleyes for the weekend. We then found a 35 - 38 foot crappie hole and proceeded to have a crappie bonanza. Tried the Hay Island crappie hole but did not find the numbers there but the wind had died down then and may have affected the bite some and did not work it too long. Saturday ended up being a very fun day out. Went through at least 10 - 12 dozen minnows.[This message has been edited by lumpy (edited 09-27-2004).][This message has been edited by lumpy (edited 09-27-2004).]
