ideas for a canadian fishing trip

Recommended Posts

I'm a northern minnesota fisherman that has heard of the giant walleyes and pike caught of the canadian waters. My family is planning on taking a trip sometime this early spring and I don't know where to go. We weren't really looking at flying in anywhere, more looking for somewhere that we could drive to and hook up with a local guide and maybe stay at a resort. If anyone has any good contacts or information for me it would be greatly appreciated. There will be about four of us and we are looking at about a 5-7 day trip. Please either post any help or you can email me at: [email protected]

thanks for the help

Hey Philip:

We have some great Spring fishing at Both Happy Landing Lodge and Camp Manitou. They are boat-in Lodges. We are about 1.5hrs out of fort frances. We fish for Northern, smallmouth, largemouth, lake trout, muskie, and walleye(not at manitou). Spring is a great time for fishing everything is up shallow. With our clean clear water clarity this is and excellent time to do some site fishing, which is a blast.

Bemijiwonder: I am bias as I live beside the Red River in Lockport Manitoba. I do not know if U have ever fished for channel catfish but Lockport is considered the finest in the world, bar none. Check with any of the catfishermen in your area and I am sure they will have heard of it.

It is a short drive north of Winnipeg (about 20 minutes) and only about 2 1/2 hrs north of Grand Forks ND. Have a look at "Cats on the Red" HSOforum and U can see the cabins etc. The only thing I would sugguest is keep it down to a 3 to max 5 day fishing trip if U have a family, not because they will get bored but their muscels will get sore from fighing those kitties. The average weight from May til Aug will be 15 to 25 lbs and from the end part of Aug til freeze up in the 23 to 35 lb range. Last Sept we had a group of 9 guys for 4 days from Nebraska and they landed 811 kitties that weighed in around at around 8.1 tons. Now that was a new bar setting but in the summer an average day of 3 fishermen in 8 hrs should be 10 kitties.
Stu at Cats on the Red has guides and gear and all U have to supply is your personal clothing and the energy.

Hey Mitch:

The two areas I am talking about are the Pipestone lake along with our 4 great walleye portage lake and also our lodge on the lower manitou system. If you have any questions you can call me at 1-800-766-0876 or you can e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks,

Matt Koerbitz

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
