Eric:

Hi Tech has a setup called a "quickstrike" It is two treble hooks and you can hook the front and tail of a bait fish. You can use this setup with a tipup or a regular rod and reel. I just started using the tipup....pretty cool. I like the tipup because you can suspend your bait easily.

I use at least 20# line. If you use a rod and reel use a 10" and 6" steel leader. use the 10" leader to hook under the gill of the bait fish(sucker or waterdog) and the 6" for the tail. If the bait is shorter use a smaller leader for the gill. Once you get a hit open the bail and let it run. It will stop (it's eating). After it starts running again it has swallowed the fish(usually) reel up the slack and set the hook and get ready to fight!

I also like the tipup because you have the flag to let you know your bait has been hit.

Where are you heading after Pike?
