Tried North lake this morning for about an hour with just a couple of bites. Then went up to Monument and from 9 to 4, probably caught around 30 fish mostly rainbows, around 12 were browns and 2 splake. None were over 14 or 15" and most were around 12", they were mostly on a small chartruse marabou jig or silver spooon and mealy.

There is another Monument lake near Cuchera, first you have to go through Walsenburg, then head west to La Veta and Monument lake is 15 minutes from the town of Cuchera. Its acually about 5 to 10 miles behind the spanish peaks.

Well your right about the drive its one of my favorites. Its been years since I've been there and the last time I was there we really did well with the kokanee, I don't know what happened. I did see some carcases of kokanee on shore so there were some in there this year. I've heard there are some larger fish in North lake have you ever fished it? Just found out that Twin Lakes is now safe so I'm thinking about giveing that a try sometime soon for some lakers.

Gilles:

The game warden from Trinadad told me that because of low water the last two years they have not stocked Kok's. The last time they netted they only got 4 salmon. As far as north lake I spent a half a day there once and caught one fish- Silver Kastmaster. Some old boys were slaying them but I swear they were illegally tipping them with worms (flies and lures only). Again, what a pretty setting. I am heading to Stagecoach this weekend for some Northerns
