Ice Fishing Wolford

Recommended Posts

For what it's worth. I ice fished Wolford Sat. from 7am until noon. I marked 3 fish and had no strikes. That's a first at Wolford. I have no idea where the fish were. Maybe in the open water. There is about a quarter mile of 4" to 5" ice at the North end, and the lake must be down around 15' of vertical. I would appreciate any ideas about where the fish were.

Welcome Icemaster1940, the few lakes that are frozen arn't fishing very good, and a lot of the lakes that I would like to try don't evan have a thin layer of Ice. So the next option that I'm going to look at is Monument and North lake near the Cuchera Valley.

I fished Wolford today. Fished the inlet from 6:30 to 8:30, Didn't see any fish. My fish finder was blank the whole time. I decided to try the Dam, With in 5 mins I had my first fish on. The ice is between 5-6" thick. Seems like everytime my fish alarm went off I had a fish. They weren't very big, But they sure kept you busy. I left at 11:00, But still had a good day.

Went to Wolford yesterday and today. kokes were hitting good yesterday until we got blow off the ice just before sundown. Today was snowy, cold (about 12 degrees) and with a 4 and 8 year old daughter along, unfishable after about an hour. I saw two fish on the ice today, but most folks talked of skunks for their efforts. I tried North of the boat ramp today as that is where the kokes were supposed to be but yesterday's 500 yards south of the boat ramp in about 12-18 feet of water was the ticket.

Mscottcody, Did you try any down by the Dam? I planned on driving up today, But heard the weather was going to be nasty. I still wish I had gone. I have a 8 month old daughter, I can't wait until she's old enough to go with dad. With my luck she'll hate fishing.

Ron-
No I didn't. I saw a couple people down there. I've always wanted to fish over there and will give it a try next time. What do you usually pull out of the water by the dam- anything different from the usual assortment of rainbows? I started taking my daughters fishing when they hit three. That way, they just get used to going. they spend more time playing on the ice than staring down a hole, but it makes it easier to get the okay from the wife to spend a day or two pursuing an activity she finds silly.

Mscottcody, I normally catch Rainbows and kokes, Cuts down by the dam. But, Last year a caught a Laker. I didn't even know they put them in there. Try it, And let me know how you do. Also, Try from the dam and try the east side of the dam to the first cove. I do really well in that area. It's funny, My wife thinks we're nuts. But, Before she had the baby she would go with me.

I've been told that those were actually Splake, not Lakers. We caught a number of them last year and they looked a little different from lakers. They were small, about 14-16" and skinny as snakes. For that matter, almost all the fish we got at Wolford last year were skinny. There doesn't seem to be much feed in there.

Every year we manage to catch something a little different outta wolford, sunday got one of those splakers in question... looks like a green mountain lake trout to me, and a white sucker, last year was a sculpin, before that, golden trout and 10# cutbows. Seems that sagebrush is almost gone and so are the big trout as far as numbers go
