Bring on the Shrooms

Recommended Posts

Can't wait for the mushrooms to start pop'n up. I have reciently moved to Des Moines and am looking for some spots. I wouldn't want you to give up your prime spots, but some general area would be great. I know there are some up at big creak, but after that, I don't know . PLEASE HELP.

Goody and others!
For deep fried morels all year long try this!
Rinse Clean well, soak in salt water to kill the bugs but dont soak for to long or you will loose flavor rinse well again and drain extra moisture on towels, beat enough eggs to coat mushrooms and then roll in cracker or cornflake crums(flour doesnt turn out as well)place single layered on a piece of wax paper on a cookie sheet and freeze well(making sure they are well frozen removes excess moisture so you dont get as many ice cristals and they dont stick togeather)After ther well froze transfer to a ziplock and freeze for storage. When you want mushrooms just heat your oil to temp(I like 375)and drop the mushrooms in still frozen(DONT thaugh first)I have kept them from season to season like this for the last five years and they turn out great! When storing in the freezer its best to keep them in a chest freezer or one that doesnt have auto defrost as the auto defrost ones arent good for long term storage!
Good luck and great eating!CAL

Hey Fisherman, not going to be able to help you to much. I live south of Iowa City and have a few places on privite land. But my brother-in-law lives in Des Moines and hunts around Big Creek and also Brushy Creek. He does pretty will each year, but i don't know where around those areas he goes.
I second Cal's method of keeping mushies for winter eating, I use the same method and it works really well. We cooked up a couple hunderd at Thanksgiving and my kids loved them before the turkey got to the table.
Good luck on your hunting, just being out is the best part.

Goody acording to my temps they should be starting in southern iowa.If you make it around twelve or three mile this weekend you might want to take a look in south to eastern exposures.More rain will help and when the temps get back in the 70's watch out! When i say they should be starting i mean most of your finds will be small grays!

Took the girlfriend on her first ever shroom hunting outing. 5min after I told her how to look and what to look for I hear her say, "Honey, I think I found some!" We ended up getting a couple dozen small greys. They will taste mighty fine with some walleye for lunch tomorrow!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
