Two way radios

Thinking about getting a couple of 2 way radios for fishing. Anyone have any suggestions or experience with any good or bad brands?
Thanks- M

By the way, the ice is pretty good around the Cedar Falls area-6", but still some small spots of open water.

I us them all the time. Just have some cheap ones- 2 mile range. But They are great when in boats. Two people. split up and when one finds them ( the fish) all he has to do is give a shout. I've never used then icefishing, but will,

Mr. It all depends on how much $ you are willing to spend, I have a pair of Motorola Talkabout DPS, with the 5 mile range and they really work great, and yes we have tested them out to the 5 mile range on flat ground. the different models have 1 or 2 watts power, my brother inlaw has purchased a pair of midland G-11 which also has the 5 mile range and they work just fine also. One thing I would recommend when you decide to by your radio is to make sure you get one with a battery tray, the ni-cad battery that came with my radio seems to die alot sooner then the AA batteries, I am sure the other brands are just as good, this is just expereiance with these 2 brands, ricbak

Mr Marmooska,
I also have the motorola talkabouts. My only complaint is the battery life. I bought my dad a set for Christmas and they have a charger that you put the radios in when your done. I dont remember what brand they were but I liked the idea. I know that the motorola's go through batteries if you dont shut them off. I have the 2 mile range models, the 5 mile would be better. Good luck.

I have the original Mot Talkabout 250's with the 3 AA batteries. They work real well for ice fishing with my friends and seem to have plenty of range (supposed to be 2 Miles). Battery life is OK with the AA's. Always take spares along anyway.
My complaint on these is the hands free "VOX" feature. I wanted to be able to use the radios without the need to prese the talk button to speak...nice when you are yanking up fish! The models I have do not work well with any of the headsets or ear buds I have tried...you have to yell into them to have the radio pick up your voice. A friend bought a Midland FRS radio that seems to work better than the Mot's on VOX.
Check out the sales and get something that makes sense for what you plan to use them for-they are great on ice.
