Help with squirrels...

Recommended Posts

Hope I dont get yelled at for this...

The darn (@#%@#%@^#&) squirrles are still taking my tomatoes... THe neighbor has been shooting them (weee haaaaa) so they are coming more and more to my garden... I dont want to shoot them (the whole discharge of firearms in the city limits thing)...

I have taken a couple of rat traps and baited them with acorns... well Im getting plenty of voles and mice (yes with a rat trap) but the squirrels are more finicky, they wont touch the acorns on the trap...

Anyone else with ideas on how to rid them ??? I tried chemical (works with rabbits) to no avail... Im not a softheart who does not want them to die, but I dont want to go shooting them and have a neighbor call the law (the guy who is shooting them has been here for 50 years)...

Thanks !!!

Wally

Go to fleet farm and buy a live trap for squirrels. Then take some peanut butter (jif works best) and stick it to some wax paper and then place it on the pan in the live trap. The squirrel enters the trap and has to chew through the wax paper to get the pb, this causes the pan to go down and slams the door shut. That's it, I have caught 50 - 100 squirrels this way when I used to trap nuisance wildlife in the city's.

The live trap is your best bet as mentioned above. My uncle used to trap them and relocate them into the country. On his best year, he trapped 68 squirrels and 1 woodchuck. He used to use peanut butter and a few while unshelled unsalted peanuts in and around the trap. Good luck!
