Migration Report

Recommended Posts

I am starting this topic for people to post waterfowl sitings. The cold weather is supposed to freeze up Canada and send some birds down. So it will only be a matter of time before they trickle into the state.

Just since this last little cold snap I have noticed a push of Gadwall, along with a few Mallards into the Lake Thompson area. No Large numbers of ducks yet and it will probably be couple weeks yet until we start seeing the migration taking hold.

Please post up if you notice a jump in birds in your area. This will help everyone prepare for the birds that are on their way.

It's gonna be a fun season! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Mike, I didn`t see the numbers either. I`m still hunting a few miles off the lake and they may not be coming my way. I checked a few lakes in the area and didn`t find much. A couple of weeks yet we should be smoking. Flip

Well, it took some time but the birds are starting to show up.

Yesterday I was out fishing in the morning and started to see buffleheads and Canvasbacks. Went back out in the evening to a different area and saw hordes of Mallards and Canada geese. Did see one small flock of Specklebellies and heard some snows. It should really get crankin here in the next week or so.

I was in the Watertown area this last week during the rain, wind and fog hunting waterfowl and saw a lot of northern birds down. Had good luck on the Gadwals, Mallards, and Widgeons. With a nice Pintail thrown in, I would have thought that these fair weather fans would have been long gone by now!

Had a fair weekend. Shot some mallards and started to see more of the high flying flocks of light geese.

I just want to say that working as a bar tender I have the chance to talk to may folks from all over especially during hunting season. Last night I spoke with a older couple from Winnepeg, Canada. They said they have more Canada's there than ever. I asked about the light gese and they said they are still farther north. Temps. up there are still in the 30' and 40's during the day!

I would still have to say a couple more weeks until SD hits its' peak. until then the more miles a guy puts on scouting the better he/she will do.

Reel Inn,

Just curios who this is? A-town is not that big, so chances are I know you too! Do you ever stop in to Schmidty's? I work there 4 night a week.

Tonight, I did see a few flocks of geese flying after shooting hours but nothing flew until it was nearly dark in the area I was in. (Lake Poinsett)

Went duck hunting this morning and got our 36 in about a hour and a half. Only 21 greenheads is all!!HEHE!! And got some pass shooting at about 10,000 snows and blues, but other than that it was a pretty boring day!! We were about 35 miles soutwest of Aberdeen, SD, and there's still plenty there YEHA!!!

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
