Super Black
Gentlemen, Planning a West River hunt this year and was wondering what to expect to see for animals, Whitetail vs. Mulies. I heard there is both, but would like to know what to expect. I'll be hunting about 40 miles west of Mobridge. I've been out there prairie dog hunting and have seen some mule deer, but there has to be some whitetails. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Super Black.. Mike Walerak
While I can not speak from personal experience, I would think you would be able to see whitetails. I would also expect to see some antelope. Hopefully someone else has more knowledge of the area.
Jackpine Rob
Sounds like you will on the Standing Rock or perhaps the Cheyenne River Reservation(s). Although there are some mulies around there, the majority of the deer seem to be whitetails.Make sure you know exactly where you are at all times. The reservation is a checkerboard of private, Tribal, Tribal Trust, etc. The bait store in Mobridge has (or at least they used to have) color coded maps that can help you determine the type of land.Saw some deer as I was driving through on Hwy 12 last weekend. Couple of dead ones along the way also.
Super Black
Thanks alot. I'll keep note of where I'm at all the time. Already have a map which shows where I can hunt. It will be the Standing Rock Res, but real close to the Cheyenne res. Again, thanks a bunch. Sincerely, Super Black
