I have had difficulty with starting in sub-zero temps this season. Sometimes I can get the electric starter cranking, then assist it with a simultaneous pull on the recoil handle. The engine oil that I use is Amsoil 0W-40 which has a thinner cold flow characteristic, while still having a high thermal breakdown rating. New batteries are best when FULLY charged when initially activated, before putting into service. I wish that the compartments were more roomy, to accept larger batteries. Sometimes it is good to have a jumper pack. Just make sure that the safety insulated clamps will fit where they need to go. A propane torch or sunflower heater can be used to warm the engine's top end, just don't use them if there is fuel or starter fluid around.

Both my fishing partner and I have 850's mine a 2012 his a 2013. We have experienced allot of trouble starting these machines in the bitter cold so much that we basically don't shut them off. We have pulled the plugs and find that they are dry so its not fouling the plugs that is the issue. Seafoam is not what you want to use it has a tendency to eat up rubber gaskets. Sta-bil and a ethanol additive is what I have been using. I have also been trying to let it run at a idle for a bit after I have been driving it. I don't know why but it seems to help restarting. I'm real close to trading this machine in for something else it has not been dependable.

I had an issue w my 550 this winter. Its started fine in the garage, i drove to the lake, turned it off and fished for an hour. I went out to leave and it wouldnt figure out what gear im in and wouldnt turn on. it wouldnt even run the fuel pump. No matter if i pulled the break, shifted the gear lever, whatever. I did some forum searching and traced it to the gear indicator switch. Im guessing i got some powdery snow in there or something. Cleaned it and havent had an issue since. Dont know if you are having issues like that or not.

If you are getting the fuel pump, but it seems as if there isnt enough juice to turn it over. Get a sealed battery and keep a maintainer on during the winter. Especially id you plow using a winch. I use a jr and it works well. I keep it plugged in constantly
