Dave Genz Legacy Series Rods

I have to admit, I was skeptical about the new Dave Genz Legacy Series combos with fly rod style guides when I first saw them. After interviewing Dave for an upcoming series of articles and hearing his enthusiasm for them I decided to give them a try. I have been using the True Blue combos for quite a while and I really like them.

During my last two trips I have switched back and forth between the True Blue and Legacy Series combos and I have to say that I am sold on the Legacy combos. The fly rod style guides do not freeze up as much and when they do it is much easier to clean them off. The rods are extremely sensitive and the reels are noticeably smoother with the extra bearings, especially when it is extremely cold out.

Because the rod tip is so small the tip guide is more like a regular guide and not a tip. This leaves the tip of the rod exposed. I did find that it had a tendency to get caught on fabrics. So, I applied a small bead of fly head cement to the tip. I'll let you know how it works out.

In my opinion the Legacy Series combos are definitely worth the extra money. So far I am very impressed.

Has anyone else used these combos this season? What do you think?

I've been using two of them quite a bit this year and really like them. I hadn't thought much about the line guides but they do seem to stay a lot more ice free then regular guides. So far I have iced some nice crappie, perch and even a nice bass and a little northern so far. Great sensitivity and good backbone.
