I have used them and like them. My nephew uses them alot for brook and rainbow trout and loves them. I was worried about the line freezing in the hole and not setting the hook but so far no problems. I use mine mostly for lake trout with cut bait. I plan on trying it for crappie this yr though and I expect it to work just fine. Much nicer to reel fish in using a rod and reel than just a hand line.

I have used another brand called the automatic fisherman for trout and steelhead with success in Wisconsin. This brand has a bobber that is filled with a non toxic, anti freezing solution, that sits on the surface so your line doesn't freeze in. Unfortunately they are illegal in Minnesota.
