Hi,
I have in-laws in Aberdeen and their son graduated this year, he is going to Rapid City in the fall, for college.

I am going out there this summer, mid July, and would like to take him fishing. We have done the Richmond Lake trip a few times, only 10 minutes from their house, are there any other places to go? We have done OK, on the crappies and once went to Roy Lake and caught some Pike.

Would a trip to the Waubay area be good in July?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

I recently graduated from college in Aberdeen. Is it too late to help this person out? I just read this post, or I would have replied earlier. Aberdeen is a sportsperson's paradise. Even from shore there are numerous opportunities for walleye. I know the crappie thing also. I miss the area terribly, I would be happy to tell you exactly what to do, and where to be.

I will start with stating that the James River is a heaven to the scientific walleye fisherperson. The slightest difference can be the difference in limiting and catching nothing. This is what I love about this river. Anyone that has fished this river consistently will tell you the same. People in SD will bend over backwards to put you right on fish and to have a positive fishing experience. However, I have learned since moving to MN that things become quite secretive, possibly due to more pressure-which is understandable. I am happy to help out other individuals involved with the friendship and positive atmosphere involved with fishing MN. However, I also understand that thousands of fisherpeople view these reports not involved with the site. If everyone was catch and release just because they enjoyed being able to catch a walleye and hold it up into the sunset and release it just for the fun of being able to catch it, I would throw out information left and right. If you are involved with the site, care about other people and understand how fragile every resource that we have today is, I would be happy to talk to you via email or phone for you to enjoy the NE portion of SD. I do not know everything about this area, and I never will, but I have paid attention to detail, and have picked up a few tricks along the way. Good fishing to all, drop me a line if you are heading to Sodak! I would be happy to help you out! C&R

I will definately post some general info here when I get a few more minutes. Are there people in this forum that head to the Aberdeen area frequently? Possibly during pheasant season? If so, you may be in luck for a limit of pheasants, and walleyes-of course repectively. I have some info that will put you in this direction. Take care, C&R.

Hi catchnrelease,
you make some very good points.

Would it be possible for you to give general information on the fishing and techniques?

I think you'll find that the vast majority of FishingMN users are tuned in to the idea of selective harvest. The best thing we can do is give out general information and keep preaching selective harvest and especially:
Catch-Photo-Release

It's in everyone's best interest anyway.

Who wants to be a meat angler, fish out a lake, and end up catching NO fish vs catching plenty of fish, keeping A meal and releasing the rest.

Thanks for sharing C&R

C&R -- Thanks for the offer! I have seen people launching off hwy 12 on the James many times. I have heard they were going for Walleye, but didn't figure it was a good option for me and my in-laws. We have done pretty good on Roy and Richmond, pretty much going for Walleye, Pike and Crappie. Have not tried anything real serious with them, not the most technical/scientific group of anglers. I just got them to try slip bobbers a year ago.

We actually wound up with them coming to visit us, and had a great trip out to Chisago for some Sunnies and Walleye.

If you need any info on MN lakes, I am plenty willing to share. [email protected]

I have been fishing everything from Sunnies to Muskies, for over 20 years. I have plenty of spots to share. Some will be shared under the "agreement" of CPR and/or Selective Harvest.

Good Fishing and Thanks Again for the Offer, might need some info for this fall or next summer.

Steve

    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
    • I’ve only seen that from the air.
