Crappies on Waubay

Recommended Posts

Heading out this afternoon for a weekend of fishing in the Webster area. I've seen reports of a crappie bite on Waubay, but I know that the lake doesn't have a real big population of crappies.

Anybody have any comments on general crappie location and/or presentation on Waubay?

I know the walleyes have been on a binge, but I'd like to target some other species.

Thanks in advance!

The Crappies this year are so hard to locate that I've moved to Enemy Swim for the Craps.

You;ll get so many small Walleyes biting your bait on Waubay that it'll get real frustrating if you are in the mood for Slabs.

I've done well in the past ono the Grenvile Grade, but they haven't been there, or the North end in the trees, but no Crpas there this year either.

Good Luck...

Thanks for the report, Chells. I have fished Enemy Swim for bass and bluegills, but never targeted crappies.

Have you been doing fairly well there this year?

Though I'd post results from this weekend...

Did not fish Waubay, but heard from a few individuals who did. Many walleyes caught, almost none big enough to keep. The huge bite continues as I think they are low on food. I talked to one guy who seemed fairly sincere...said they landed at least a hundred and went through five scoops of minnows. They were only able to keep two fish. Sounds worse than Mille Lacs.

We fished Lynn and did fairly well on crappies with an occasional walleye mixed in. We didn't catch any walleyes that met the 16" minimum, which was fine. The bite was kind of tough after the massive cold front that moved through on Friday, but we managed to catch fish. Just had to put in the time.

Talked to a couple of groups who fished Bitter and the bite was tough. Both boats managed a few walleyes and a few northerns.

The weather was good after Friday. Had a great weekend. I love that area.

I also was in Waubay for the weekend. I honestly think that the crappies have been fished out of Waubay. We have done really well the past 3 years on Waubay for crappies but this year they just seem to be gone. I spent 7 days out there this year and never really found them and spoke to alot of guys that did not find them either. You would hear of a few guys catching a few here and there but not like years past.

I had my 6 year old son with me this past weekend and we also went through 5 scoops of minnows on Saturday. We did manage to get 4 keepers, and he made sure to let me know he put 3 in the livewell.

Went out to Pickeral (sp) on Sunday morning and got into a few nice crappies. I did not know that there was Muskies in that lake. One of the last crappies of the day I was pulling in I had a Muskie chase it out of the water. Well I do fish Muskies alot (my wife would say way too much) my mind went into Muskie mode. I put the crappie back into the water and the Muskie spun around came back and pushed the crappie out of the water. He never actually got ahold of the fish, but it sure got my son nervous!!

Sorry I missed your question before you left last week--I headed to the Cabin Friday a.m.

I haven't fished on Enemy Swim this year, but I know there are some really Craps in there--we usually get 'em Ice Fishing.

Not sure if your friend is aware of the consumption warning on Bitter. It's a flooded junk yard and very high in PCB's--I stopped fishing there 2 years ago when I realized the fish are toxic...
