Guest
Can you still drive on the ice at Waubay?
ifishsd
A four wheeler or snowmobile would be ok. Last week there was a foot of snow on the lake. That is what I was told. Hard to believe. But they said 20 niles north of Watertown was where the snow started.
Muskeez
I don't know what the latest warm weather did to the snow but last weekend we were on Waubay and there were several areas where the snow was a foot deep on the lake. I got stuck with my 4x4 turning around and my partners helped push out a guy that tried to drive out onto the lake in a mini van. Even saw 2 ATV's get stuck. There also were some slush pockets where you could see that some people had to really give it heck to get through. I wouldn't think that the warm weather would have hurt the ice any as it was 13" on Waubay where we were at (SE corner) and there were several trucks running around. I would say if you have access to a snowmobile or ATV use it. I found a spot on Lynn that was only 6" thick and 20 yards away a truck had been parked on 10". Better to take a bit longer and stay on the correct side of the ice.
WxMan
Guys most of the ice is still very good. The only exceptions would be for the lakes/ponds/or sloughs right around the Sioux Falls area. The cold snap will definitely help firm things up and even add to the ice thickness. Also, the good news is that it will get even colder next week, so the 50s/60s are over with for now. So we better all get out and enjoy it! Good luck!!
Guest
Well I think you should be o.k. especially after this weekend. I was out last weekend on Waubay and thought I'd drive the shoreline and walk out to where I wanted to fish but as I was walking full size pickups starting passing me so I thought it must have been good enough to drive on... be careful I know we are used to 2' of ice this time of year but its just not that thick. IceEyes
I drilled through 18 inches over the weekend. I could have driven the truck out.
Guest
I drove all over Waubay, Enemy Swim and Bitter this weekend. By the time I left on Monday I would say there was a good 22 inches of ice on the lakes. Waubay actually had a lot of snow on it in places. oldbullhauler
I put in at Kanagoo on Monday and found lots of 22" ice on that side.Jeff
Guest
How was it over at Kanagoo? I heard they were really going over there but I usually stick to the other side of the lake. Scott Steil
oldbullhauler
we fished there from about 1000 till 1400. Made three small moves and caught lots of perch in 20' of water. Most were 9- 10". A few pushing 12". Only a couple 14" walleye.Small line test really made a difference. Those using 1 or 2 lb test caught many more fish than those with the heavier line.Spikes and minnows were equally effective.
Thunderchicken
Was at Waubay yesterday. We drove onto the ice I believe it was around 20 inches. Caught perch in the 10 inch range and a bonus 16 inch walleye. Had to get away from the crowds though to gettem to bit.
