Bass through the ice

Just got back from Grand Rapids area ice fishing.  The deeper gills were slow so we moved shallow where my buddy's brother was getting some nice perch.  Being so shallow, we flipped down our fishtraps to do some sight fishing. The big bass were active and we ended up catching 7 or 8 fish with 5 over 17" with a couple going 20".  What a trip looking down into 4 fow and seeing a big sow come in and crush my chubby darter.  Catching bass through the ice is fun enough, but to do it sight fishing is a real treat!

If you ever want company when you come up to the GR area, PM me...never hard to twist my arm and get me on the water/ice!

Bass through the ice are definitely fun.  A couple of years ago Meat Run and I were chasing perch on Leech, and he tied into a 5+ pounder on his little noodle rod...that was a fun battle to watch!

Bass are a funny fish when it comes to winter time. I target a lot of Panfish during the hardwater months. On some lakes you will catch them mixed in with the Sunfish in the shallow weeds and on others they won't bite anything until very late in the season. They are a fun when they are snapping on light line and small rods though!

Man that sounds awesome. Were you on a weedline or in the weeds?

We were nearly arms reach away from a big reed bank. They were definitely in the reeds or cruising the edge.

Your on. Love the GR area, open water or hard. Fished alot of lakes north up by Marcell.  A certain big lake south of your town is high on my bucket list for smallies and walleyes, open water, and bluegills ice season.
