new electronics

I got a boat this spring and the electronics are dated. It has three locators right now. 2 at the console one at the bow. I'm looking to start by replacing one of the console ones with a side imaging unit. I'm not brand loyal and just looking for some input. I've never fished with anything other than 2d sonar. I just need some help with screen size and "bang for your buck".

I think you would be happy with the 899. I have a 998 and 858 and love them. Can't believe I fished without side imaging all those years. I don't think you could go wrong with either Lowrance or Bird. Personally I prefer the wide screen of the bird units better.

My 858 is up front but the screen size is fine. Of course I like my 998 better but I think you will be fine with the 899 especially if you've never even used a side imaging unit before. Anything is better than nothing. If you do want the large screen you can find used 998 online for about the same price as the 899.

Good choice! I had my 998 first and immediately had to by one for the bow. Have fun with your SI units. Check out some of the Youtube vids of Doug Vahrenberg. He has some great vids on how to setup your units and read side imaging.
