Cracked hydrometer for maple syrup

Recommended Posts

So after boiling up my last batch yesterday, I noticed the hydrometer was cracked ever so slightly and there was a tiny bit of moisture inside. This actually was after washing it. It could have happened while washing it. Anyway, I am going to e-mail Roth Sugarbush who makes the instrument. Or call them on Monday. But I am wondering if the substance inside is lead and if I should be concerned I will give people lead poisoning with my syrup! Will be too bad if I have to dump it all but I don't want to harm people either! Thoughts, experience?

There might be some lead in the bottom of it.....some even have small little lead balls.... but from what you described can't see how any of it could have "gotten out" ....it's just used to weight it. This is not like an old fashioned thermometer where there is liquid mercury type stuff floating around in it. Heck, as a kid we even broke open thermometers to play with the mercury....might splain a few things though smile
