humminbird 688 gps question

I want to use my hummingbird 688 ci hd on the ice. Just looking to use the gps function, the unit defaults to the simulation mode without the transducer attached. Does anybody know a way around this. Would be nice to have in the truck and know the lake depths without cutting holes everywhere

when you 1st start up the unit, there is a screen that pops up that allows you to hit menu, and you can pick from 3 modes, Normal, Simulation, or System status, you have about 4 seconds to pick
