GasPumpGuy
Help! Just bought a 97 Ski-doo MX583 (cheap) Sled has bout 4800 miles on it. Starts fine runs great. Noticed some oil leaking out of it. Started taking apart to see where oil was coming from. Took off muffler/tailpipe and there was oil in it. Not a ton but probably a couple of ounces. Not a mechanic but realized this is not normal. Is this just a sign that engine is running to rich, or gasket leaking somewhere, or a sign of impending doom. Also observed oil leaking out of bottom of engine, looked like coming out of a gasket. Don't want to spend a ton of money or time getting it fixed or fixing it myself. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank You!
RIPN LIPS
Couple ounces seems like alot. It could be running too rich but my 04 mxzx had a gasket fail between the head and muffler and leaked oil too. I changed the gasket and it stopped. If you are looking to have someone work on it my neighbor who is a snowmobile mechanic works out of his garage on the side and has really reasonable rates and stands behind all his work. pm me your number and I with send you his number. Surface Tension
Build up of unburnt fuel. Not that uncommon especially if you start the sled a lot and not run it for long. Go on a long ride and it'll go away.
shortfatguy
2 stroke Snowmobiles only have oil in the fuel so there is no oil to leak out of the crank case. Probably just unburnt fuel and the oil on the front of the engine is probably leaking from the seal where the exhaust connects to the engine. Check to make sure the bolts are tight that hold the Y-pipe to the engine.
