Ion Auger

Recommended Posts

Just brought my old strikemaster gas auger in to the shop after I ripped out the pull cord. I was looking at the Ion augers. They've been out a while now. I looked at prior posts on them. Any buyers remorse? I'm a 20 hole puncher typer fisherman when I go out. No permanent house. Would love to know if everyone is loving their Ion or should I stick with my old gas auger?

Thanks

I bought one in Dec. Took it to Canada last week fishing out of portables. Drilled 30-40 holes a day through 18" of ice with temps in the mid teens. It was dead at the end of each day, I think it would have done more if the battery had been kept warm. My buddies 3hp solo sat in the Ranger most of the day and we just used my Ion because it so convenient to just set it down and drill, no starting and warming up. I think I am going to get an extra battery and the heated carry case for it next year. I had a 3hp solo and have no regrets switching.

If you want to keep your battery warm, a 6pack sized cooler and pack a couple of hand warmers around it. Just don't set the cooler on the ice.

Used mine up on upper red last week and we had 24-27 inches of ice depending on where we set up at. Had to use the extension because of the slush bucket. I was using my 10" bit and gotta say i was getting about 6-8 holes before the battery started to decline rapidly. That 10" bit cuts so much more ice, but its nice to have the 10" hole with electronics being in the hole too. I take the 8" with me too if i plan on going off and using my portable and wanting to punch more holes.

Bought an Ion this yr to keep the fishouse clean and its a great tool for fishing, always starts, reverse is cool, haven't ran out of battery yet, 27 holes in 24" fo ice with 8", keep the battery warm and it will last a long time, might need a longer extension but have the old auger for deep ice.

Nope they slice right through like butter . I've used several augers over the years & these ions are the best by far that I've ever used . 2 yrs on mine now used it quite bit & couldn't be happier! No more gas or propane for me !

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
