"Trailer Wiring Default" Any ideas?

This was the error message on my F150's message center when I hooked up my 2011 Ice Castle Friday morning @ 5:00AM to head north. The lights all worked, however, the electric brakes did not.

The following actions were then taken (many which were directed by Ice Castle themselves via the phone) to no availe:

-Verified wiring correct in 7 prong plug

-Hooked up Castle to 2014 F350 and got same error message

-Emergency Breakaway battery on nose of IC replaced

-Fuses checked

-Front panel of V removed to expose and check ground wire associated with brakes

-Brake wires behind IC tires appear normal

**As a note, one brake had seized to the drum over the summer and I had Crystal Welding service both brakes/drums, this fall. When I was leaving, I got a similar error msg and the brakes weren't engaging. Turned around and we figured out it was the 7 prong receiver on my truck. Replaced that and the 7 prong plug at the time and I had brake function once again.

Needless to say, we hit the road anyways a few hours later minus any trailer brakes. I'm hoping someone has had similar issues and can help troubleshoot. Otherwise, looks like more time/money at Crystal Welding. mad

Have you had this Ice Castle hooked to this truck before with no problems in the past? I would lean towards the trailer being the problem-it almost always is. I have dealt with A LOT of wiring issues (I am a mechanic for MnDOT, where everything is covered in salt and nothing seems to match when it comes to vehicle to trailer wiring due to changes with ABS, Electric vs Air brake wiring, etc...) Look for any wires that may have been chewed apart by mice, corroded, or just plain broken.

I would bet that the issue is either the trailer plug or the truck receptacle.

Look closely at the inside of the trailer plug, the 7 blades are prone to having the blades getting pushed deep into itself and losing connection.

Also try bending the brake wire tab/blade around in both the truck receptacle and trailer plug to make a better connection.

Shoot some WD-40 or some dielectric grease on both too if you haven't already.

Hope this helps smile

Not sure what year your truck is but i posted a link to a HSOforum that may give you some insight to possible problems. May be a totally different fault but when i searched "trailer wiring default" nothing came up.

Thanks Blackhawk. After reading all 6 pages of the thread, I'm starting to believe it's indeed a design issue with the electrical plug in on the truck (mine is a 2011). Sounds like water gets in there and causes the fault.

This would explain why it worked again a month ago as soon as that was replaced, but then the problem re-appeared this past weekend. It would also explain why we got the same message on the 2014 F350.....wow.

Guess I'll have to disassemble, clean it out and see if that fixes things.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
