Duck hunting on deer opener

Recommended Posts

Deer hunting ??? C'mon man , Where is your sense of fair chase ? Those things are like pests. That would be like fishing in the trout pond at the sport show . Not me. Duck blind. JK. I know it will be tough for deer hunters. Same as ducks. Some places thick, others, none.

A couple years ago we had a great shoot sitting on the lake on opening deer opener. Until a farmer and his kid decided to come over to tell us to leave. They said since we are ruining there deer hunt were going to ruin ours. All of us had the right to be there but after a lot of arguing we pushed off to the other side. No duck is worth getting a slug flung ones way.

I'll deer hunt for a day or two, shoot my two deer one for me one for the Ms. like i do every year and then duck hunt. I usually hunt ducks in the morning and then sit for deer in the evening looking for the trophy since we party hunt after the frezer is full of venison.

Yeah, tough call! The northern birds seem to be on hold until they know we have other things to do! But I thought, why wait till next weekend?

We had a good diver shoot in western MN over the weekend thanks to a very gracious host/landowner and his scouting of the area. He knew what sloughs were holding birds and it paid off well. Yes, I know I'm not wearing my hat well. wink

I was hoping to sit with my bow in the evenings but a cat tail blade in my right eye put a kabosh on my Saturday deer plans. We spent the afternoon helping our host family process their daughter's buck she flung an arrow into in the morning. Her first bow kill. Everybody happy. smile

Sunday there were less ducks and they were decoy shy as expected. We still did well but didn't reach a limit. I did get a money duck though. Money, cause it's gonna cost me....

Thankfully they started pulling decoys by the time they did so we could clean the birds, have lunch and a visit and hit the road to another farm in the area where another buddy was hunting. He was after birds exclusively since he filled his buck tag with a nice 135 inch 8 pointer. He wanted to pull stands but left one for me to sit in.

I climbed up at 3 pm fearing for my life in that crazy wind but it didn't take long before a couple button bucks came out and fed around by me. I patiently waited, arrow nocked, waiting for mama. Well, cousin eddy came out instead and gave me an irresistible 20 yard shot. At 4 pm I texted "Done. Please come pick us up".

For a guy who just wanted to get it done this year. I was a pretty happy camper with last weekend.

This weekend might be more of the same. Setting up our daughter for the rifle hunt in central MN but I'm not party hunting. Everyone wants to shoot their own deer but the son of the host family. He only wants to hunt ducks and has some big water scoped out with no partner - yet. smile
