Reopen it each time. If you're out there at least once a week its not to bad. I just chisel around the perimeter and scoop chunks into a 5 gallon pail. A hole cover slows the freezing way down.

Another good trick is to let anyone you know use the house. They think you're being a nice guy but the truth is you're just trying to get someone else to do the dirty work. Works every time!
